GET REAL, BILL! Bill Maher’s Slide from Critical Thinking to Just Let Them Resignation
by David Comfort
Bill Maher’s season-ending Real Time show featured podcaster, Mel Robbins, pitching her latest bestseller, The Let Them Theory, modestly subtitled, A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can’t Stop Talking About. Fans call her idea groundbreaking, though the Greek Stoics proposed it more than 2000 years ago and, a century ago, Reinhold Niebuhr, revived it in the Serenity Prayer, adopted by AA.
Robbins’s presto-chango self-helper complements Maher’s own shift from earlier liberal activism to non-interventionism, if not apathy. “I’m not gonna lose my shit about it,” he says referring to Trump’s East Wing wrecking ball. Recently he has also dismissed the Epstein case as a flap over a “dead pervert’s emails” — never mind the many victims, co-conspirators, and the possibility of a prison murder, not a suicide.
What Maher is losing his shit over lately is liberals losing their shit about his apparent defection. “I didn’t leave the Democrats — they left me,” he indignantly insists. No, most mainstream party members, the silent majority, though puzzled, have not left you; but, yes, radicals, the minority, the loudest, probably have.
Pontificating, the atheist Real Time host has taken to scolding lefties for self-righteous intolerance, while he virtue signals his own open-mindedness. But he fails to mention that the extreme right is no less, arguably more, guilty. Lately, he’s been after leading Democrats, especially Obama, for refusing to be on his show, while praising “courageous” MAGAs for accepting. Kelly Ann, Kid Rock, Steve Bannon, etc. have seemed happy to do so since he backburners his confrontational no-bullshit self to Just Let Them showcase their surprisingly reasonable and winning personalities.
On Bill’s excellent adventure – dinner at the White House arranged by Bud-light slayer Kid Rock — Trump revealed himself to be quite the “gracious” gent himself, winning over the comedian he once sued for millions for wagering he was mothered by a monkey. Maher took heat for praising the President’s amiability and good manners, the most stinging from Larry David’s My Dinner with Adolf. (Indeed, Hitler – like Mussolini – was known for being quite charming, especially in the Thirties, before the real unpleasantness got started.)
In his last show of the year, the First Amendment champ, unable to curb his acid enthusiasm, went knives out on David who had also declined to appear on his show, joking, “I’m not smart enough.” To which the Mensa host belatedly replied, “Yeah, he showed it.” Just getting warmed up, he sucker-punched Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, alleging without proof that her pre-election letter to friends, listing reasons for not voting for Trump, was an excommunication threat “ultimatum.” Kimmel himself is another burr in Bill’s thin saddle since the Late Night host didn’t thank him for his support during the brief cancellation by ABC. For someone who specializes in dishing it out, the firebrand seems unable to take heat himself.
All of this is surprising and upsetting since I’ve been a Maher fan since Politically Incorrect. I admire his incisive wit, penetrating observations, and contrarianism. He is forceful and persuasive on many issues: religious credulity, the brutality and misogyny of Islamic theocracies, the hypocritical, holier-than-thou excesses of the Woke Left, the capitalist wanton destruction of the environment. His advocacy of communication and compromise between left and right is also admirable. But this is only possible if the two agree on reality – not MAGA “alternative facts”: fake 2016 election, big government Trilateralist control of mainstream media, vaccine mind control, chemtrail weather control, Jewish space lasers, Hillary running a child molester ring from a pizza parlor, etc. The Real Time host steers clear of these unrealities while softballing his MAGA guests by way of teaching elitists how to reach across the aisle without losing a hand.
After his dinner date, Maher set TDSers straight: “A crazy person doesn’t live in the White House, but one who plays a crazy person on TV a lot.” Really? The guy who dumped AI shit on libs and called for the execution of “treasonous” democrat leaders, while showing signs of a mental collapse more dangerous than George III’s? Maher went on to “give credit where credit is due” to President peacenik for negotiating a Middle East ceasefire (which, as expected, was broken within 48 hours and failed to win him his Nobel). Finally, the clincher: “Trump hates war,” Bill informs the uninformed. Huh? The guy who is trying to start one with Venezuela; who changed the Department of Defense to the Department of War; who triggered the 1/6 Capital insurrection; who encourages his mob to take critics “out on a stretcher”; who will host MMA cage fights on the White House lawn for his Nativity celebration next spring?
Does Maher shrug all this off as just politics? With a tyrannical narcissist and his personality cult wrapped in the flag they don’t honor and the Bible they don’t read, politics is no longer just politics: Now it’s all about morality and humanity, or complete lack of it. As the saying goes, Evil wins when good men do nothing. Or, to put it another way: when good men just say Let Them.
